Our 1 Acre – One Veggie Patch at a Time

Home Made Dog Food

After reading about a few people making their own dog food and also wondering what is really in the ‘canned’ stuff. I decided to make my own variation.

Taking a few different recipes I used

  • 1kg mince
  • half butternt
  • 1 carrot
  • 3 potatoes
  • 2 eggs
  • quarter cup rice
  • 1 tablespoon tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Vegemite
  • breadcrumbs
  • half zucchini grated

Basically I made a meat loaf! I figured if the dog did not like it we would eat it.

So cook rice and steam veges. Them mash pumkin. Mix meat, eggs, tomato sauce, vegemite, breadcrumbs, grated zucchini. Chop cooked potatoes and carrots to a small size. Add this into the meat mixture. Bake in oven apprx 180 for an hour

We made two pan loads and it should last approx 2 weeks.

Now any cheaper? probably similar, but we had all our home grown veg, eggs and I make the breadcrumbs

  1. But the big question is…. Did the dog like it??

  2. And the verdict from the dog?

  3. The verdict from the dog is yum yum yum. The next week talking to my local butcher about it – he actually makes a pet mince which is left over meats and liver minced up and frozen. At $3.50 per kilo a bargain. From that 1 kilo I get two kilos once I add the vege. Broken down into 200gram lots we get 10 servings

  4. Good recipe! We tend to add a leafy green in there to mimic the fibrous veggies/grass that a wild dog would get from the bellies of prey.

As for cheap meat, I’m not sure what’s in your area, but we have two favorite options. There’s a “Rural Pet Meats” store nearby that sells minced beef, turkey, chicken, lamb, and roo, including ground bone, and the prices range $3-5/kg. They also sell organ meat. Elsewise, we head to our nearby butcher, one of whom sells ground chicken carcass, so it’s all the bone/meat/organs left over from butchering the prime cuts. It works really well for dogfood stews and mealoafs. He sells us 5kg for $5!

  5. My butcher doesn’t do the ground bone as apparently his mincer is not set up for it, but with the pet mince being 3.50/kg that is OK
