Probably a bit late, but the garlic is now in the ground. Last year was the first time I ever grew garlic and was surprised at the great crop I ended up with. I planted Festival (a small garlic with that extra bit of punch)and 3 other varieties. The Festival seemd to do the best so I orderd 6 bulbs of that variety again from garlicfarmsales.com.au. They also sent two complimentary bulbs of Aria, so we will see how that goes as well. This year I have a dedicated garlic bed, and a bit more room so besides the above mentioned garlic I also included some of mine from last yeras crop. All going well I expect approx 80 bulbs come summer.

Well this weekend we decidedd to harvest the garlic. We dug up one and to our surprice it looked and smelled like garlic, so as Sat was a warm dry day, I thought that was as good as any day to harvest the garlic. So taking my garden fork to the vege bed I extracted them all.

And what a haul, 42 garlic bulbs and a few more in the rose bed which will be harvested in a few weeks. Definately planting more next year as I want to keep 10 bulbs for planting out next year.

Garlic first picked

Onve we had it all collected we brushed them down and gave them a bit of a hair cut (we cut off most of the roots). Now comes the curing as garlic needs to hang in a dry airy place out of direct sunlight. It will sty there a few weeks before being stored in a nice cool, dark place.

Well it has been a week between posts but here is a bit of a catch up, Lee Ann and I built vege patch #3 last week. It was constructed using a combination of sleepers (had a few left) and rock logs. This patch will be used for our garlic which I purchased from http://www.garlicfarmsales.com.au.

The garlic purchased was

6 bulbs – Fiery Punch

1 bulb – Rose Brown

1 bulb Silver Rose

1 bulb Shantung Purple

So I am planning to have them in the ground this coming weekend.

On vege patch 2 everything has sprouted except the cabbage, does this take longer to sprout? I will give it another week to see how it goes. with vege patch one MORE zucchini and it looks like we will get some corn before it gets too cold, some corn heads are developing – woohoo. The other big event this weekend is of course the Yass Show, we went last year so expect an update with photos after we go to it this weekend.
